The X - ray view of highly obscured AGN
نویسنده
چکیده
The properties of Compton–thick AGN are reviewed, with particular emphasis on BeppoSAX hard X–ray observations. I also discuss evidence for the presence of Compton–thick, circumnuclear matter in unobscured AGN, and I briefly introduce the hellas2xmm 5–10 keV survey, discussed in more details in other contributions to this volume.

The soft X-ray polarization in obscured AGN
The soft X-ray emission in obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) is dominated by emission lines, produced in a gas photoionized by the nuclear continuum and likely spatially coincident with the optical narrow line region (NLR). However, a fraction of the observed soft X-ray flux appears like a featureless power law continuum. If the continuum underlying the soft X-ray emission lines is due to T...
متن کاملThe obscured quasar population from optical, mid-infrared, and X-ray surveys
Over the last few years, optical, mid-infrared and X-ray surveys have brought to light a significant number of candidate obscured AGN and, among them, many Type 2 quasars, the long-sought after “big cousins” of local Seyfert 2 galaxies. However, despite the large amount of multi-wavelength data currently available, a proper census and a panchromatic view of the obscured AGN/quasar population ar...
متن کاملDoes the obscured AGN fraction really depend on luminosity?
We use a sample of 151 local non-blazar active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray survey to investigate if the observed declining trend of the fraction of obscured (i.e. showing X-ray absorption) AGN with increasing luminosity is mostly an intrinsic or selection effect. Using a torus-obscuration model, we demonstrate that in addition to negative bias, due to abs...
متن کاملThe Bepposax Hellas Survey: on the Na- Ture of Faint Hard X-ray Selected Sources
The BeppoSAX 4.5-10 keV High Energy Large Area Survey has covered about 80 deg of sky down to a flux of F5−10keV ∼ 5 × 10 −14 erg cm s . Optical spectroscopic identification of < ∼ half of the sources in the sample (62) shows that many (≈ 50%) are highly obscured AGN, in line with the predictions of AGN synthesis models for the hard X-ray background (XRB, see e.g. Comastri et al. 1995). The X-r...
متن کاملHot Dust Obscured Galaxies with Excess Blue Light: Dual Agn or Single Agn under Extreme Conditions?
Hot Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs) are a population of hyper-luminous infrared galaxies identified by the WISE mission from their very red mid-IR colors, and characterized by hot dust temperatures (T > 60 K). Several studies have shown clear evidence that the IR emission in these objects is powered by a highly dust-obscured AGN that shows close to Compton-thick absorption at X-ray wavelength...
